The only reason people think pits and rotts are vicious dogs is because they've been used for such a long time as guard dogs and fighting dogs. The only type of dog I've ever been afraid of was a golden retriever. You know, the nice, friendly, loving family dog. Yeah, not so much with the one that lived next door to me. Vicious as hell. I couldn't even walk out my back door without that dog rushing the fence and snarling and barking and growling at me.
It is in how they are raised, however, I have seen cases where a dog who has been great all its life and had never shown even a hint of a mean side has turned around and bit someone, most often someone its lived with for a while. But cases like that aren't limited to the 'vicious breeds' at all, just last week we had to put down a black lab who who bit three people who have lived with him his whole life. Animals take so much shit for humans its unbelieveable.
