tech support. riiiight...

is there such a thing as real, honest to goodness tech support these days? here's why i ask. my mom's computer has been acting wonky for about a month now. we initially thought it was because of the new Norton Internet Security i had installed on the computer, but when we removed it the same thing was still happening. my dad was unable to check some of his email. when he'd open it the email almost looked like it was encrypted. but when he would hit reply, he could read them. then my mom's email started messing up too. so i tried to figure out what was wrong with it. my thought was that a virus had corrupted some of the script files.

so long story short, i couldn't fix it. so my mom took it a computer repair shop. she paid $130 for them to fix it. picked it up, brought it home and lo and behold the email was still not fixed. they blamed it on my mom because she didn't go over the trouble ticket to make sure that checking the email was on the list. WTF?! it isn't the customer's responsibility to make sure they do their job correctly. she told them she was having trouble with the email so it was their responsibility to make sure it was on the trouble ticket. so after we'd gotten it hooked back up we had to unhook it and take it back up there.

they "fixed" it and when mom showed up to pick it up they told her it would be another $130. again i say, WTF?! they didn't fix the problem the first time, my mom had to bring this heavy ass machine back to them and they're going to charge her another $130? complete and utter bullshit. she was pissed, but didn't fight them. stupid, stupid. so she brings it home for a second time. guess what! yep...you got it. Norton Antivirus is still finding the two Trojan horses that have been in there the whole time.

so she just called them a few minutes ago. she said that they should come here to fix it since she's already brought it in twice for the same problem. they informed her that a house call would be $65. say it with me...WTF?! these guys don't have a fucking clue what they are doing when it comes to computers. they sure as hell know their shit when it comes to scamming people out of their money though.

oh...update. they just called my mom back and now they're back-tracking. they asked her what version of Norton she's running. she told them 2004. they said..."oh. maybe that's why your virus program is catching those trojans. we're using 2003." *thunk*thunk*thunk* they told her if she brings it up there at 2 they will fix it while she waits. riiiiight. we'll see. i personally think she should call the BBB on them. fuckers.

that's freaking ridiculous. they need to not only fix it while she waits, they need to refund the second $130 payment. idiots.

If she'd paid using a credit card or check, I'd advise her to cancel at least one payment. To be done after she gets her computer back of course.

Oh and the bullshit they feed her about not catching those viruses 'cos they have Norton 2003 and she has Norton 2004 is wrong. It wouldn't matter which version she or they had as long as both had up to the minute updates. Dumb asses!

Yes, report them to the BBB. If mad enough, write an editorial to the local newspaper about what happened too. Chances are she wasn't the only one bilked by these jerks.

That's not tech support!! That's "here let me bend you over the table and stick it where the sun doesn't shine!" Are you going to raise holy hell? IS there any recourse for you or your mom at this point? That is just NUTS!!!

My computer used to have Norton, but I now have AVG (luckily, because a few days after he had been complaining about be downloading things, he somehow downloaded a virus). It is wonderful.
