i finished The Host this afternoon. yes, i'm behind. i wanted to wait and see what a few of you said about if before i delved into it. i actually really liked it. i know some people compared it to Twilight because of the love triangle, but nothing in it reminded me of any of the Twilight characters.

the first couple of chapters didn't grab me at all and i was worried i'd wasted my money. thankfully it got much better! when it all started i was rooting for Mel to win the battle, but by the end i was rooting more for Wanda. i really loved how their relationship blossomed. the bickering and sarcasm and affection was a perfect mixture. i do kind of wish we'd gotten a little bit more of what it was like between Mel and Jared before Wanda though. he wasn't the most sympathetic of characters. i did feel for his loss, but once he knew that Mel wasn't gone he didn't seem to spend a whole lot of time trying to get to know Wanda or even talk to Mel. if i found out my true love had somehow managed to avoid a hostile take-over on their body and i could see them, touch them and talk to them every day i'm pretty sure i would!

now...on the other hand we have Ian, who was so fucking awesome i can't even stand it. at first i wasn't sure of his motivations, but after a while it became pretty obvious that he was starting to fall for Wanda. i loved that he was always the one to try to protect her. even from Jared. he absolutely broke me when he found out that Wanda was going to give up Mel's body. seriously. i had to stop reading for a bit because i couldn't see through the tears. p.s. [livejournal.com profile] blushingblaze, i don't know why, but for some reason i pictured Ian like this. which is weird since he usually plays a bad guy...

i wasn't sure how SMeyer was going to resolve it so Wanda didn't have to die. i was thinking someone in the caves was going to get so hurt so badly that they had to have soul inserted to stay alive, but that was before the hospital raids. i was really happy that they refused to let her commit suicide and they found her a suitable host. though i'm sure she would have preferred someone a bit physically stronger. ;)

definitely didn't think i'd end up loving Wanda's character more than Melanie's. so that was a nice surprise.

all in all, i'd say if you enjoyed any of the Twilight trilogy you'd enjoy this one. just give it more than the first couple of chapters.
