computer woes and reefer

Reefer Madness? coulda done without the zombies. however, Kristen Bell was absolutely fantastic. i think you may have to be stoned to truly appreciate the movie, but yeah...

in other news, does anyone have a clue why when i play videos on my computer the video lags? the sound is always fine, but the video moves in slow motion. i thought it might be because my hard drive was getting dangerously full, but i deleted a bunch of things and have about 6GB of space. i have all the proper codecs installed(i think). so it's not that. it's really annoying having to go to my mom's computer to watch videos. any help or advice is appreciated.

Is it the memory? Have videos always run slowly, or have they just started lagging recently? If you tend to run a lot of stuff at one time (like I do) it may eat up your memory cache and not leave enough for the video to run properly. Sometimes that happens to me, and if I restart the computer (or even shut it down totally) it resets the memory and is fine. Sometimes you can increase the amount of memory the computer allots to certain programs...I'm not for sure how to do this, though.

you know...i don't know. it started happening around october when i was watching Farscape constantly and i'm just tired of it because i've been watching Logan/Veronica fanvids. *g*

i don't really have a lot of things running, but i'm going to try shutting some of them down. see if that helps...

I see just shutting them down didn't work...did you restart your computer? Sometimes it doesn't reclaim the memory from the things you closed until you shut down. Shutting down completely seems to work better for me than just restarting.

At least video hasn't been lagging on that computer always, which would indicate that it doesn't have enough memory period. I'd guess it does, it just isn't allocating it properly to your video card.

you know what worked? shutting down Slimbrowser. and all those other programs too, i'm sure. yay!!!

zombies creep me out. i haven't watched Shaun of the Dead for that very reason. in fact, if i had known there were zombies in Reefer i might not have watched it.

I *hate* zombies. They're like my least favorite monsters ever. I did watch Shaun of the Dead, because I love British humor, and I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as most people I know did, because of the zombies. Just...ugh. *shudder*

what faithx5 said. Sounds like a memory problem. Sometimes it helps to shut off any unnecessary resident programs. They load automatically when the computer starts. They can be identified by the small icons that load on the lower right hand side of the toolbar at the bottom of your desktop. If you right click on them, you'll get a menu that allows you to click exit. Just make sure it isn't a programs you need to run the computer.

In theory so long as you have something like double the size of the file you're playing free on your HD it shouldn't be a memory space issue.

Sounds to me like you may need to update your codecs.

I am usually great with this stuff but my brain is muchy. Give me specifics and I can maybe find a solution for ya. :)

well...surely 6GBs is plenty then.

wanna give me some links to codecs. it's not just things i'm playing with WM. it's real player, VLC and DivX.

specifics? umm...well the sound plays normally and the video freezes and then moves in slow motion. don't know how to be any more specific...

My first thought is that it's your video card. Do you know what kind you have and more important how much video memory your graphics card has? (you can find it in the video settings in windows) If it's a low end card, that would explain why videos play slowly.
