panned movie
Feb. 12th, 2005 09:40 pmi just watched The Village. i'm not sure why everyone hated it so much. i kinda liked it. it definitely wasn't what i expected and had the typical M. Night twist, but i liked it. surprisingly enough, i wasn't spoiled for the movie either. Bryce Dallas Howard and Joaquin Phoenix were very good.
now i'm debating watching The Notebook, the final episode of Wonderfalls or an ep from season one of Farscape. decisions, decisions.
oh and this meme is nifty.

I really enjoyed the Village
Date: 2005-02-14 01:19 pm (UTC)I think also, people put too much emphasis on "finding the twist" with MNS' films, or either being (or not being) convinced by the creepy/supernatural elements. To me, though, those things are really just a catalyst. What MNS does best, if you ask me (which you didn't, but I will share anyway) is create rich, textured atmosphere, with unusual stories involving ghosts or aliens or monsters in the woods, as a backdrop for really sharp, simple stories about human nature and human relationships, with a pretty specific focus.
Personally, I've really enjoyed that in all of his films, which is why the weak spots and plot holes in a lot of the supernatural plotlines don't bother me.
