people who are afraid of pit bulls should be watching this show on Animal Planet. this is the kind of pit bull i know. sweet, protective, excitable and only vicious when made to be. all dogs have the potential of biting. not just the "vicious breeds".

miconceptions really irk me sometimes. especially when people are unwilling to open their minds to an alternative.

Found you via friendsfriends, but I'm totally watching Animal Planet right now and how cute was that pit bull? The thing I love about this show is that they are so educational about different breeds, especially pit bulls.

there was a show before this one with a pit bull that had been left in an apartment alone for weeks. she was completely emaciated. i wanted to take her home with me.

also, hi!

were you a bronzer? i ask because you have quite a few of them on your list.

The pit bull that they found in the tub? I saw that one. Poor girl. I always hope owners get arrested and the book thrown at them for things like that and yet, I know they probably don't. So sad.

I was a bronzer lurker, but never posted. I got to know evilprettykitty through the nsync fandom and we quickly realized we had other fandoms in common. I've kind of adopted a few of her bronzer friends along the way.

Also - you have fabulous VM icons. I'm so in love with that show! It's been great watching the reruns this summer and seeing everything develop again.

I'm way more afraid of the small nervous "accessory" dogs as we call them then I am of pitbulls and rottweilers and I work at a vet clinic so I know!

Have you ever seen "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel. He has a "pack" of dogs, several that are pits. He uses a couple of his pit bulls as "calming" or "balance" dogs when he goes out to work with problem dogs.

Shows it's not the breed, but how the dog is treated.

People are mainly the cause of dogs misbehaving, in my opinion. And the poor dogs get the bad reputation. My family owns a pet store where we sell puppies that we get from people locally (NOT puppy mills), and although we realize that it's all how the dog is treated, we have a hard time with bringing in certain types of dogs because the people who raise them, raise them to be mean. It's so sad.

Everytime someone tells me they are scared of pit bulls I just think of my brother's. Bailey will definitely attack you, but with kisses. He can be vicious if provoked (or someone is trying to hurt us) but why people just assume pit bulls are mean and will bite everyone is beyond me.

Growing up, I was more afraid of the little bugger poodle my neighbour had than I was of my Uncle's Pit growing up. I think that bugger took a nip out of everyone in the neighbourhood at least twice.

The thing nearly bit my brother (seriously) one day, but my Dad intervened & sprayed the thing with the garden hose until it ran away. It was watching us from it's porch all shivering... we felt bad for a few minutes... until it started snarling.

i saw the doggy of which you speak, and i agree wholeheartedly. the fact that some asshat was trying to train that sweet dog to be a fighter is horrible!

altho my opinions on pitbulls isnt really out yet...i agree that how a dog was raised determines the character of a dog...my best friends have had rottweilers for years, supposedly also a "vicious" breed, these dogs were raised with nothing but love, in an enviroment with small children. thye are quite possibly the cutest(albeit huge) and nice dogs i have ever seen !

* cats are way cooler then dogs tho...

I'll just chime in with my opinion that there are no bad dogs, just bad people who are supposed to take care of them.

The only reason people think pits and rotts are vicious dogs is because they've been used for such a long time as guard dogs and fighting dogs. The only type of dog I've ever been afraid of was a golden retriever. You know, the nice, friendly, loving family dog. Yeah, not so much with the one that lived next door to me. Vicious as hell. I couldn't even walk out my back door without that dog rushing the fence and snarling and barking and growling at me.

It is in how they are raised, however, I have seen cases where a dog who has been great all its life and had never shown even a hint of a mean side has turned around and bit someone, most often someone its lived with for a while. But cases like that aren't limited to the 'vicious breeds' at all, just last week we had to put down a black lab who who bit three people who have lived with him his whole life. Animals take so much shit for humans its unbelieveable.

I fully agree that it's how a dog is raised and not necessarily the breed that makes one vicious. My Rufus was a 140LB Rottweiler. He thought he was a lap dog. He was the funniest, sweetest, most loving dog we've ever owned. He'd knock you down in his enthusiasm to get *scroochies*. He never barked unless it was night and he heard some sound he knew wasn't normal(or if we stopped rubbing his belly before he was ready for us to stop). The dog slept in a twin bed in the house out in the sunroom (this started because he got in the house one night during a thunderstorm and was scared to death of thunder). When we would take him for a walk in the neighborhood, we didn't put him on a leash ... didn't need to. He didn't go in other people's yards, he didn't rush other dogs, he didn't even bark at the dogs barking at him. And yet people would see him coming and "shoo" their small children and animals back into the house. Rufus would only have attacked someone if they were hurting one of his Humans. Very sad he's gone.

I hate to be the voice of dissent here but I feel the need to add my two cents. Please don't pelt me with rotten fruit *g*

I do not care for pit bulls. This opinion is not based on misconceptions but on personal experience. I have come into contact with these dogs three times in my life and all three times were disastrous. In one case, I witnessed a pit go after my neighbor's 14 year old cat, jump several feet off the ground to grab the cat off a ledge and proceed to rip the cat to shreds all over her front lawn. This happened while my sister and the neighbor's son, who were both four years old and playing in the yard, watched. This same dog also attacked 2 other animals, injuring one and killing the other(a black lab puppy). This is only one of my experiences with pits. I won't bore you with the details of the other two.

I do agree that there is no such things as a "vicious" breed and that any dog can be dangerous. Unfortunately, the illiterate morons of the world are not training poodles or chihuahuas as attack or fighting dogs. They are training pitt bulls and rottweilers because these dogs have the genetic nature and build to be truly dangerous. These dogs don't just bite. They attack to kill, as they trained to do. We have had four children mauled to death in the last five years here in the Central valley. Three of them by pitts and one by a rottweiler. This is why I don't like them and why my daughter will never be allowed around them. All of this aside, I do realize that there are people who have raised these dogs as pets and feel very protective of them. But I have to base my opinion on my own experiences, just as you do.

I do understand your point of view on this subject. I hope you can also understand mine.

there are exceptions to every breed. my dog isn't very fond of cats or dogs in his territory. if he could get ahold of them, i have no doubt that he would probably kill them. i blame that on the fact that we didn't socialize him. so it's totally our fault and i plan on rectifying that as soon as i have some extra cash. i'm gonna enroll him in a one on one training session.

i understand and respect your point of view. i was mostly referring to those who only hear the bad things about the breed on the news and base their opinion solely on that.
