there's something about BSG that irritates me. the transgendered usage of "sir" to address superior officers. i'm no feminist(well...not really), but that just rubs me the wrong way. i don't know.

also? [livejournal.com profile] spectralbovine is completely predictable and i'm listening to him breathe now. hahahahaha!!!

I actually like the use of sir. But then I'm kind of a weird feminist in that I think all this PC crap is getting out of hand. It's the intent behind the word that matters and in this case it's one of respect, gender is irrelevant. And I think that's the real reason I like it (once I got used to it): gender truly is irrelevant on BSG. Do your job well and no one cares whether you're a man or a woman. That's also one of the reasons I'm happy they made Starbuck a woman. Not that I watched the original show, but I like the mindfuck inherent in that.

Oh, and I almost wrote down something that might've been a spoiler, but I took it out since I don't how far into the show you've gotten.

i get what you're saying, but if gender is so irrelevant why not call everyone ma'am?

i'm not very far at all into the series so thanks for erasing what you had written. i've only watched the mini and eps 1 and 2 of the first season. though i have been spoiled for one thing while i was flipping channels during the finale.

p.s. i never watched the original series either.

Well, like it or not our society (and theirs, I'm betting) has been male dominated. I see it as tradition, nothing else. It is a bit of a shame that they didn't just make up a new word, but then again that's not as easy as it sounds.

I actually dislike words like "stateswoman" and the like because I think it highlights the fact that it's a woman (like: OMG, I can't believe it's a woman, how did she ever rise so high in the ranks?!). A title is a title and unless it's a royal title I think it should be gender neutral, which in a lot of cases means it'll have "man" somewhere. But so what? In English that's even a variant of human.

I just couldn't get into BSG. Of course, I watched and loved the original series and just can't get over them making Starbuck a woman.
