i've had my netflix account on hold for about a year because it just stopped being cost effective. i wasn't watching movies enough to warrant that monthly charge. they'd sit for weeks on my entertainment center unwatched and sometimes even mailed back before i'd watched them because i'd had them for so long i just didn't have any interest in watching them anymore. well...since all my shows are on "fall hiatus", i decided to start using it again. only problem is i can't think of any movies to add to my queue.

so help me, dear flist. recommend some movies i should add. i like everything, really. not a huge fan of horror, but i'll watch an occasional one. as long as there are no zombies. i don't do zombies.

Little Miss Sunshine was probably my #1 favourite movie of the year. Mrs. Henderson Presents was also a good watch, and quite moving (or maybe that's just because the Blitz is one of my emotional switches). If you haven't seen Brick, it's pretty awesome (if you can wrap your head around the noired up lingo), esp. as a Veronica Mars fan, since it's another take on how one might apply a noir template to a contemporary teen setting.

I'll second the Brick rec. Quintessential high school noir. And I mean that almost literally, to be honest. It's noir as fuck...in high school. No holding back. At times, it almost seems parodic, that's how little holding back there is.

Funny ... I just watched Brick myself. I think I am too dumb for it.

I loved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Little Miss Sunshine also good. Ice Harvest pretty good if you are feeling festive. I watch a lot of TV on DVD as well ... seems to get watched and shipped back out quicker that way.

I have literally 400+ things in my queue. You should go there for ideas. Friend-add me ... bgmoon at gmail dot com.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang! yes! that's the one with Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer, right? i wanted to see that. Little Miss Sunshine is officially added because i'd wanted to see it before, but now it's gotten recs from, like, every person who responded to this post.

what's Ice Harvest about? who's in it?

will add you! (i haven't even added anyone there. that's how much i use it.)

Yes, KKBB is Robert Downey Jr. and Val. Quirky and awesome.

Ice Harvest is John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton. It is a bit of a caper ... it's not GREAT, but it's decent, and different. And Cuscak is always great.

You can add me if you want, too.

I've had Netflix for over 5 years. I'm an addict. Right now I'm watching "Doogie Howser M.D." Season 1. :x

As for movie recs, I'll third Little Miss Sunshine. Also? Hotel Rwanda is one of my favorites. Bride & Prejudice if you enjoy sometimes cheesy, but fun and colorful films. Grease is my all-time favorite movie. Can't Hardly Wait is the quintessential high school film, in my opinion. Plus, if you don't mind foul language and sometimes gross humor, Kevin Smiths' movies are always fun.

awesome! will add you asap.

i don't even know how long i've had it. probably 3+ years now. i used the hell out of it at first and then just got lazy.

thanks for the recs. Grease and Can't Hardly Wait are good ol' standbys. my personal quintessential high school movie is The Breakfast Club. i can quote the shit out of it.

Miracles was good. I liked 16 Blocks, which I'd never heard of until my Aunt recommended it. One of my Netflix friend recommended a film called Primer. I've not yet added it to my queue. I've been getting mostly TV of late. I've just finished Farscape season 1, and started season 2. I'd seen maybe 1 episode when it was on, as I was poor and cable-less in those days.

Miracles. is that the hockey movie? or are you talking about the Greenwalt show that got cancelled?

16 Blocks. Bruce Willis? i seem to remember something about it.

Farscape is possibly my favorite sci-fi show EVER! enjoy the ride!!! i'd love to see your thoughts on it.

I had the title wrong. It's Millions. It's a Danny Boyle movie. It's set in Ireland, and it's about this kid who finds a sack of Pounds right before the switch to Euros. Sorry. My memory went wrong...

16 Blocks is indeed Bruce Willis, and Mos Def. It'sabout a cop who has to deliver a witness to testify, but, there's a world of bad guys trying to kill him over the 16 blocks from the jail to the court.

Farscape is totally growing on me, and Claudia Black is beyond awesome.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Go.

If you want to try an occasional horror, watch The Descent, which is coming out next week. It's not your typical horror movie by any means, and, to be honest, the less I tell you about it, the better. Except that it takes some time for it to show itself as a horror movie, so don't be all confused when there aren't horrible monsters jumping out from behind corners in the first ten minutes.

I need more direction here, [livejournal.com profile] tiggz! What are you in the mood for?

Go.

i've seen both of those. liked ESotSM. didn't really care for Go all that much.

anyone in The Descent that i'd know? sounds...interesting.

i actually really love comedies, but i watch action, drama, indie. *shrug*

There's no one in The Descent you'd know. It's a bunch of British unknowns. But there's only one important male character in the whole movie. It's very Girl Power!

Comedies, comedies. I can't think of any good comedies, off the top of my head. Dammit, I'm useless.

The Thomas Crown Affair is great, if you like art thief heist movies that spend ten minutes awesomely paying homage to Magritte.

I'm just getting to this email addy, oops.

tTCA with RR and PB (as well as the original with Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen) is sexy and smart, so, yeah, probably. They're really good heist movies. Did I mention sexy as hell?

Did you watch H&M? I maintain that if one isn't touched by it, in a best possible way, that one's heart is a cold lifeless cinder. Also, it's completely reflective of the optomism and good intentions of that era. I maintain that Heroes is the first big public hit that also has that can-do optomistic spirit, which is one of the main reasons I love it so.

Sin City
Inside Man

Customers always love:
Lucky Number Sleven

Kinky Boots
V for Vendetta

There's a few. And I second the recommendation of "Millions" a few comments up. Great movie.

If you haven't seen it, "I capture the Castle" is wonderful!
If you're after something quirky, try the TV series Boston Legal. It's got James Spader, William Shatner, & Candice Bergen, & it's a hoot!
I love Fantasy/sci fi, but in that genre I can't think of anything that stands out - Serenity, of course, but you've probably seen that! Oh, & I enjoyed Doom! Pitch Black/The Chronicles Of Riddick too.
I'm a boy at heart, & I love action films - The Bourne identity, & the Bourne Supremacy were both good. Most of the Steven Seagal films are great fun! The Long Kiss Goodnight, with Geena Davis was absolutely brilliant!

That's all I can think of.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells
Boondock Saints

...I can't think of anymore right now.
