This certainly isn't the first time Variety has lacked even the most basic working knowledge of what "the little people" think, but, really now. The overwhelming majority of consumers with whom I have discussed the WGA strike are throwing their support to the writers, even those people who don't watch television. Despite what The New York Times and certain other AMPTP-sympathetic conglomerates are trying to sell, most Americans realise that this isn't an issue of a bunch of over-paid Hollywood artists whinging about not making more money. Writers deserve the residuals for the content they've created. I know that the proliferation of game shows starring contestants who cannot do up their own shoelaces correctly might lead people to assume the American public is comprised of drooling morons who are distracted by the shine of tin foil, but even we, in our tiny pea-sized brains, can grasp the concept of fair pay for work. When a union strikes, they aren't just doing it for the members of their own union. They're doing it for all workers, everywhere, in the hopes that the common man or woman might have a leg to stand on in the face of large corporations. The public stands behind the WGA and will continue to do so, even if/when we are bombarded with "Are You More Sentinent Than This Slug" five times a week.
